Can I use the mailboxes on the street/in public to send a package?

So I want to send a package to my friend a few states away. Its about the sized of a tissue box, and weighs about 13 oz. Can I use the blue mailboxes that are on the street and at the post office?

Also, if i were to send it by priority mail through USPS, can I use my own box, or do I need to use a USPS Priority Mail flat-rate box?

You have to go into the Post Office to mail it.
You can use your own package for priority mail if you want. They have some tape that they will wrap around it that says Priority Mail.

You need to take it to your local post office in your box with your address and the person you are sending it to and then have it weighed and measured, then they will put postage on it and mail it for you.
